Malta Skateboarding Association

MSA 2003- Present

The Malta Skateboarding Association (MSA) is a non-profit organization established in October 2003 to support and promote skateboarding culture in Malta. It was formed in response to the potential loss of the Msida Subway, a popular skate spot, which was under threat of being converted into a garden. Through grassroots efforts and collaboration with local authorities.
MSA successfully transformed the Msida Subway into a skatepark in March 2008.

MSA’s mission includes assisting communities with skateboarding facilities, providing advice, and fostering the growth of skateboarding among Malta’s youth. They have been instrumental in changing the perception of skateboarding in Malta from a misunderstood activity to a recognized sport and art form. Their initiatives have included organizing competitions, community events, producing skate videos, and maintaining skate spots like the Msida Subway.

KING OF THE PARK

Beneath Msida’s busy streets lies the iconic Msida Subway Skatepark, a hub for Malta’s skateboarding scene.

Originally a pedestrian underpass, it became a skate spot in the 1990s and was officially turned into a skatepark in 2008.

The King of the Park is a yearly skateboarding competition organized by the Malta Skateboarding Association (MSA).
The inaugural edition took place at Msida Skatepark in 2024, featuring a 16 skater knockout tournament spread over four events.
The first event was held on Saturday, July 6, 2024, including multiple rounds like the quarterfinals.

Skaters display tricks, creativity and style as they battle for the title of park king.
Concrete ledges, rails and graffiti walls make the subway a perfect urban playground.
Spectators enjoy music, street art and skate culture, making the event a celebration of Malta’s youth.
Events like this continue to grow Malta’s skateboarding community and highlight local talent.

National Competitions

The Malta Skateboarding Association (MSA) has been instrumental in advancing the skateboarding scene in Malta through the organization of national competitions. These events not only showcase local talent but also serve as a platform for Maltese skateboarders to gain recognition and potentially qualify for international competitions.

The inaugural National Skateboarding Competition was held on October 1, 2022, at the Msida Skatepark. This landmark event marked a significant milestone for the Maltese skateboarding community, attracting participants from across the island and even Maltese skateboarders residing abroad. The competition featured various categories, including street and park disciplines, and was supported by organizations such as Island Skateboarding, Venice Castrogiovanni, and the Malta Street Sports Association.

Building on the success of the inaugural event, MSA continued to host annual national competitions, with the latest edition taking place in late 2023. These competitions have become a cornerstone of Malta’s skateboarding calendar, providing a structured environment for athletes to compete and improve their skills. Moreover, these events have helped to elevate the profile of skateboarding in Malta, aligning with global trends and the sport’s inclusion in the Olympics .

MSA’s commitment to organizing national competitions underscores its dedication to nurturing local talent and promoting skateboarding as a legitimate and respected sport in Malta. Through these efforts, MSA continues to foster a vibrant skateboarding community and inspire the next generation of athletes.
