Concrete Roots of Ekeren

Veltwijckpark Skatepark is located in the district of Ekeren, part of Antwerp, Belgium. The park officially opened in 2006 as part of a broader initiative by the city to provide more modern recreational spaces for young people and action sports enthusiasts.
Designed to meet the needs of both street and transition skaters, the park was built primarily from reinforced concrete, offering smooth surfaces and durable structures suited for long-term use while reducing noise from the previous setup. Its layout includes banks, ledges, rails, large curb, quarters, and a pyramid section, allowing a mix of technical transition and flow-based skating.
Since its opening, Ekeren Skatepark has become a well-known spot in the Belgian skateboarding scene, attracting not only local riders but also visitors from nearby cities such as Antwerp, Brasschaat, and Merksem. The park’s open design encourages community use, and over time it has hosted small competitions, skate jams, and youth events.
Maintenance and upgrades have been periodically carried out by the City of Antwerp, ensuring the park remains safe and functional. Nearly two decades later, Ekeren Skatepark continues to serve as an important hub for the region’s skateboarding community, a place where generations of skaters have learned, practiced, and shared their passion for the sport.
A small park with a big history in Belgium’s skate story.
