Under the Catalan Sun: Skating Nou Skatepark!

Every great skatepark has a story and Nou Skatepark de Santa Coloma, or La Santa as locals call it, is one that perfectly captures Barcelona’s skate spirit: built for skaters, by skaters, and shaped by community vision rather than city bureaucracy.
Located in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, just north of Barcelona, the park was born from a genuine need. For years, the local skate scene here was thriving but scattered. Skaters had to make do with small plazas, rough DIY spots, and abandoned corners of the city. What they wanted was a true home base, a space that reflected the creativity and grit of the scene.
That opportunity came when the local council and urban development teams proposed transforming a disused area of Can Zam Park into something new. But instead of handing the project to generic contractors, the city took an unexpected step.
They invited local skaters to help design it.
Working alongside architects from Straddle3 and Catalan skate associations, skaters had real input in shaping the flow, the lines, and even the textures of the park. This collaboration became one of the first examples in Spain of co-designing a public skatepark with direct community participation.
When construction began, the focus wasn’t on flashy obstacles or massive bowls — it was on functionality and authenticity. Builders used recycled materials from other municipal works, making the park not just sustainable, but symbolically connected to the city’s evolving landscape.
Finally, in 2016, Nou Skatepark de Santa Coloma officially opened with a huge community jam — live music, local food, and of course, endless skate sessions that went well into the night. It wasn’t just another park; it was a milestone in how cities and skaters could collaborate.
Today, La Santa stands as a testament to DIY energy meeting civic support, a place where every ledge, transition, and bank tells a story of collaboration, creativity, and respect for skate culture. It’s not the biggest or flashiest park around Barcelona, but it’s definitely one of the most authentic. A true reflection of what skateboarding in Catalonia has always been about: community, freedom, and concrete under your feet.
A creative canvas for anyone chasing lines, grinds, and freedom on four wheels.
