History 1980s -2016
Pretty Bay, located in the charming seaside village of Birżebbuġa, Malta is one of the few sandy beaches in the south of the island. In the late 1980s, during the development of the Malta Freeport, sand was dredged from the seabed and spread over the natural rocky shoreline, creating the inviting sandy beach locals and tourists enjoy today. By the early 1990s, the Birżebbuġa promenade was built alongside Pretty Bay, offering stunning sea views and a relaxing walkway. Over the years, Pretty Bay and its promenade have seen continuous improvements, making it a popular destination for swimming, family outings, and waterfront strolls.
2016 – 2019
Known locally as the S.P.A.R.K Project — grew from a youth-led idea into one of Malta’s best skateparks. In 2016, local young skaters and BMX riders joined forces with Agenzija Żgħażagħ and the President’s Trust Foundation to plan a modern skatepark in Birżebbuġa, right by Pretty Bay. With strong community support, thorough planning behind the scenes professional design, and funding from the Ministry of Tourism and local businesses, construction moved quickly. By March 2019, the Skate & Bike Park officially opened, offering a high-quality concrete park for skateboarding, BMX, and urban sports in Malta. Today, it remains a popular destination for riders looking for a skate spot in Birżebbuġa and beyond.
